Why the Brain Judges Instantly
The human brain is a pattern-recognition machine shaped by millions of years of social living. When we encounter a stranger, the brain's threat-detection systems — particularly the amygdala — activate almost immediately, evaluating whether the person in front of us is likely to be friend or foe. This process predates conscious thought; it is fast because, evolutionarily speaking, speed mattered more than precision.
Psychologist Alexander Todorov at Princeton University has shown through repeated experiments that people judge faces on dimensions of trustworthiness and dominance in under 100 milliseconds — before they have had time to consciously process what they have seen. Crucially, giving people more time to look at a face does not dramatically improve accuracy; it mostly increases confidence in the same initial judgment.

First impressions are built from a rapid integration of multiple sensory signals. Non-verbal communication dominates. Research consistently finds that posture, facial expression, eye contact, and movement contribute more to initial judgments than the words a person actually speaks. Voice qualities — pace, pitch, and tone — also factor in heavily, especially when visual information is limited.
The specific traits people tend to assess first cluster around two axes: warmth (Is this person friendly and trustworthy?) and competence (Is this person capable and confident?). Social psychologist Susan Fiske and colleagues have described this two-dimensional model, known as the Stereotype Content Model, as a near-universal framework people use to categorize others rapidly.
Physical appearance also plays a significant role — and not always in ways people would endorse on reflection. Attractiveness, height, and clothing choices all influence initial assessments, often activating the halo effect: the tendency to assume that people who look a certain way also possess unrelated positive traits. How Accurate — and How Fair — Are These Judgments?
The picture on accuracy is mixed. Thin-slicing studies have shown people can reliably detect certain personality traits — notably extraversion — from brief video clips with better-than-chance accuracy. Some research suggests that very short observations of teachers' behavior, for example, can predict end-of-semester student evaluations with surprising reliability.
But accuracy is not the same as fairness. First impressions are deeply entangled with social biases. Race, gender, age, and physical attractiveness all systematically skew initial judgments in ways that have little to do with the actual character or competence of the person being assessed. These distortions carry real consequences in hiring, healthcare, the justice system, and everyday social interaction.
Slow Down Your Own Snap Judgments
Awareness of how first impressions form is itself a useful tool. When you notice a strong immediate reaction to a new person, treat it as a starting point rather than a conclusion. Deliberately seeking disconfirming information — asking yourself what you might be missing — can help counteract the confirmation bias that otherwise locks in initial assessments.
The primacy effect compounds the problem: early information is weighted disproportionately in how we form overall impressions. Once an initial assessment is made, people tend to seek out confirming evidence and discount contradictory signals — a process psychologists call confirmation bias. The result is that first impressions, even inaccurate ones, tend to be sticky.
