What the Psychology Says
Psychologists Abraham Maslow placed "love and belonging" as the third tier of his famous hierarchy of needs, sitting above basic physiological survival and safety. Later researchers pushed further, arguing that belonging isn't just one rung on a hierarchy — it is itself a foundational driver shaping much of human behavior.
Baumeister and Leary's belongingness hypothesis, published in the 1990s, proposed that humans need a minimum number of lasting, positive, and meaningful relationships to function well. The Health Consequences of Disconnection

This helps explain why communities built around common goals — whether faith, sport, neighborhood, or identity — can generate powerful bonds even among people who are otherwise quite different. The many forms human communities take reflect this diversity of structure while sharing the same underlying function.
