Carbohydrates: Your Body's First Fuel Choice
Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, the form of sugar your cells — especially brain cells — use most readily for energy. When you eat a slice of whole-grain bread or a bowl of oats, digestive enzymes convert the starches into glucose, which then travels via the bloodstream to muscles, organs, and the nervous system.
Not all carbohydrates behave the same way. Complex carbohydrates — found in legumes, whole grains, and vegetables — digest gradually, providing sustained energy and dietary fibre that supports gut health. Simple carbohydrates, such as those in table sugar or refined white bread, are absorbed more quickly, causing a faster rise in blood glucose.
Fibre, a form of carbohydrate the body cannot fully digest, plays its own important role: it slows digestion, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. Most adults in Western countries consume less fibre than dietary guidelines recommend.

Macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat) are needed in gram quantities and supply energy. Protein: Builder, Repairer, Regulator
Proteins are made of chains of amino acids — organic compounds that serve as the raw material for muscle tissue, enzymes, hormones, immune antibodies, and much more. When you eat protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, legumes, or dairy, your digestive system breaks the protein down into individual amino acids, which are then reassembled into whatever your body currently needs.

Animal proteins typically contain all nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts. Fats: More Than Just Energy Storage
Fat is the most calorie-dense macronutrient, but its role extends far beyond storing energy. Dietary fats are essential for absorbing the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K — nutrients that simply cannot be utilised without fat present. They also form the structural backbone of every cell membrane in the body and are the starting material for steroid hormones, including oestrogen and testosterone.
Fat type matters enormously. Unsaturated fats — found in oily fish, olive oil, avocados, and most nuts — are generally associated with cardiovascular benefit in population research. Saturated fats, common in fatty meat and full-fat dairy, are a subject of ongoing scientific discussion, with current guidance generally recommending moderation. Trans fats, largely from industrial partial hydrogenation, are consistently linked to harm and have been restricted or eliminated in many countries' food supplies.

Build Meals Around All Three Macronutrients
Rather than focusing on any single macronutrient, aim to include a source of each at most meals — for example, a grain or vegetable for carbohydrates, a legume or lean protein source, and a small amount of healthy fat such as olive oil or nuts.
